ESP – The Limitless Mind
When we journey into the realms of human possibility, it is often the hidden aspects which cause the most intrigue. Human reality is highly fluid, and while most people realize they possess inner sensing systems, for most they remain dormant. Accessed with the mind, ESP involves reception of information not gained through the recognized physical senses.
The idea of expanded consciousness is not new, for millennia it has been one of the core assumptions underlying Eastern philosophies, and has intrigued the imagination of mankind for centuries. Psi experiences have been reported throughout history, across all cultures, and at all educational and demographic levels.
Evidence also suggests that . . . beneath surface appearances, we are intimately and profoundly interconnected in our consciousness and identity. This evidence is drawn from areas of psychology, parapsychology, consciousness research, and increasingly, neuroscience.
According to Deepak Chopra, ‘intuition is a soul attribute that is nurturing - it eavesdrops on the mind of the universe. Even among 7 billion humans, every person has a different “mix” of reality depending on personal habits, memories, and upbringing.’
Organized research into ESP phenomena began in the late 1800’s, coinciding with the explosion of Spiritualism in the U.S. and Europe. In 1882, the Society for Psychical Research was formed. This London-based group performed the typical paranormal research of that era, as did similar organizations in the US.
During the 30’s, one of the most classic investigations of the genre saw the launch of JB Rhine’s Zener Cards, now known as ESP cards. Bearing the symbols of a circle, square, wavy lines, cross and a star, there are five cards of each in a pack of 25. In an experiment, the "sender" looks at a series of cards while the "receiver" guesses the symbols. Rhine argued that when his subjects scored highly, it could only be expected by chance, once in a thousand.
In the early 70’s, Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell conducted secret ESP experiments during the mission, with collaborators on Earth. Following 'sleep time' on the ship, he concentrated on a series of symbols and shapes on a clipboard. Four men on Earth then tried to 'receive' them. The results of those experiments were published in the Journal of Parapsychology, and Mitchell later founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences.
Psi is made possible by the apparent ability of consciousness to operate beyond the constraints of space and time. Core examples include telepathy, clairvoyance, remote viewing, precognition and telekinesis. The existence of psi, and knowledge regarding the nature of human sensing systems has dramatically increased, not in parapsychology but in science. This has been convincingly demonstrated in a large number of scientific studies, carried out by parapsychologist Dean Radin amongst others.
Biologist Rupert Sheldrake conducted a number of ingenious experiments showing psi abilities are widespread, even in animals. He also ran many other telepathy experiments, showing that people can sense the thoughts of others across space and time, regardless of the distances involved.
Distance mental influencing tests have suggested under certain conditions, that two or more people can create synchronization between their nervous systems. It was found that it is possible to know and to influence the thoughts, images, behaviours, physiological and physical activities of other people and living organisms. This can occurs beyond the reach of conventional senses and is non-local.
In research funded in part by the Institute of Noetic Sciences, Marilyn Schlitz and William Braud have shown that individuals who are calm and relaxed can intentionally reduce the anxiety of others in far away places.
They also found that people consciously focusing their attention, can read each other’s minds and engage in a non-sensory, creative interplay. Results magnify when participants feel empathy and rapport, or when they meditate together beforehand.
These distant mental influence findings have important implications for our fuller understanding of consciousness, health, and our untapped human potential.
Today, across the globe, ESP is easily accessible, and already woven into the fabric of modern society in the form of intuitives, such as clairvoyants, tarot readers, psychics and mediums. For the mediums of this world, everyday life anchors them in a forest of metaphysical reality, where they see, feel and sense spirit forms, day-in, day-out. Many possess multiple skill sets such as clairvoyance, remote viewing, mediumship, and precognition.
According to intuitive, author and teacher Becky Walsh, ’Intuition can be felt in the body (somatic) the mind, the emotions and even the spirit. I feel mine most in the mind, body and emotions, this is known as being a ‘sensitive’. I am sensitive to the world around me. As everything that exists is described in science as having a frequency of vibration, I hear those frequencies as if they were audible music to everyone else’s ears.’
‘It’s as if every human has a theme tune and I am able to hear if their tune is in or out of harmony with different aspects of their life, and the tunes of the people around them. The way my mind works allows me to interpret these sounds into pictures and ideas that are practical for the client. It’s not paranormal, it’s just a brain abnormality and a passion for understanding people - a very useful brain abnormality at that.’
If we stopped thinking of psychic ability as ‘special powers and all mystical’, I believe neuroscience would prove that the brain works in different ways for different people, and as in the film ‘Rainman’ some people have a skill for remembering dates and numbers, some have a skill for intuitive knowing.’
Gifted seer Edgar Cayce noted, ‘The more and more each is impelled by that which is intuitive, or the relying upon the soul force within, the greater, the farther, the deeper, the broader, the more constructive may be the result.’
Laser physicist and author Russell Targ believes,’ psychic abilities, that we all possess – offer a spacious mind that can change your life and view of reality.’
With over forty years experience in psychic research, Targ was co-founder of the previously secret Stanford Research Institute’s investigation into psychic abilities in the 1970’s and 1980’s. His work in this area coined the phrase remote viewing.
In Russell’s latest book, The Reality of ESP: A Physicist’s Proof of Psychic Abilities, it contains a letter to him from the CIA regarding declassified information. In fact, the whole of the Stargate Program is now in the public domain, via ten DVD’s which were released by the CIA.
For the lay person, perhaps the most intriguing aspect of the experiments, is undoubtedly the type of information the CIA gathered, though Russell states,’ we never received morally objectionable requests.’
‘Our work was inflow of distant information. We were not trying to affect distant persons, and we were not doing distant mental influence, that was the Soviet program. It was all psychic spying during the Cold War. Our government used remote-viewers for gathering information about Soviet weapons development, downed Soviet airplanes, Chinese nuclear tests, and many other applications, including training US agents.’ Russell says.
‘I am interested here, in teaching people to claim their natural abilities and incorporate them into their lives for peaceful uses. President Carter even described our finding the Soviet airplane in a press conference. We talk about the original Project Scanate, looking at a National Security Agency site, where Ingo Swann drew a map of the Top-Secret US facility, and Pat Price psychically went inside to actually read the code words off the safe.’
Russell believes, ‘remote viewing is one example of our psychic ability which gives us access to what physicists call non-local awareness, and what a healer calls our spiritual community. It gives us direct contact with who we are as timeless awareness that fills all of space and time. It is actually an invitation to claim our ability as human beings, to participate in a larger non-local world that is not limited by the ordinary constraints of distance and time.’
‘By quieting our random mental chatter, we can expand our awareness of who we are, and what we are capable of. These spiritual perspectives beyond the purely material offer us opportunities for more meaningful and peaceful lives. In addition, access to non-local awareness provides a toolbox allowing us to do many things that may seem unrelated, such as healing the sick, locating parking spaces, and even forecasting the stock market.’
During the Cold War, psychic policeman Pat Price, who was one of Russell’s most talented remote viewers, drew pictures of a secret Soviet weapons laboratory, and accurately described the particle beam weapons systems under construction. Four years later, after the viewer had died, this information was verified by US spy satellites.
The detailed information conveyed in these drawings was considered to be highly valuable by special congressional committees as well as the CIA. They also accurately reported on the health of the US hostages in Iran. These are just a few of hundreds of remarkable cases, most of which are still classified.
Russell says, ‘we talked with the National Security Agency (NSA) several times at their Puzzle Palace in Fort Mead Virginia, regarding code breaking activities. However, we could never make a deal with them.’
‘We proposed to psychically read their best cipher code message inside a sealed Top Secret envelope, without opening it. That way we wouldn’t have to see the code. The prospect of our actually doing that scared them off. I have since then, seen that kind of psychic reading successfully done. My wife successfully read a hand written Italian message in an envelope at a workshop which I was teaching in Italy. She doesn’t read Italian - even in plain view.’
At the SRI Targ taught hundreds of people how to do remote viewing. It requires learning to separate the mental noise of memory, imagination, naming, and analysis from the psychic signal.
The team worked with the police and FBI during the kidnapping of Patricia Hearst, who was from a wealthy and famous family. They were called by the Berkeley police department the day after the kidnapping. Psychic policeman Pat Price was able to correctly identify the ring leader, Donald DeFrieze, from a mug book, and then psychically direct the police to the actual kidnapping car fifty miles away.
Notably, several of the assistants in the program were Scientologists. Hal Puthoff, Ingo Swann and Pat Price were high up in the organization. Hella Hammid, Keith Harary and Targ, were not at all involved.
Russell believes, ‘we all have these human capacities that entail mind-to-mind connections. Worldwide psychic research data from more than 50 years show conclusively that our awareness is able to transcend distance and time, and come back with useful information. In remote viewing, our mind experiences distant places and events. For the spiritual healer, this connection is achieved by surrendering awareness to God or the Divine, and through this, making a mind-to-mind connection with the patient. Energy healers do it by themselves.’
‘In terms of mind energy, and the evolution of mankind from the materialist belief system, Russell says, ‘as we move our attention from conditioned awareness, which is defending our ego and our story, we can achieve more of our potential. We can move to timeless awareness and experience the universe as it really is. Buddhists say that we are not what you see in the mirror in the morning. Who we are is eternal timeless awareness. There would be a lot less suffering when we learn that. Our experimental data supports the idea that mind is timeless.’
In his latest book Russell writes about a breathtaking personal event his friend experienced with the Dalai Lama. At the end of a therapeutic workshop, his friend was asked if he would like to see Dalai Lama as he really is. What unfolded was the experience of sitting quietly with His Holiness and suddenly having the room filled with a palpable energy, a blinding light, and the magical appearance of Avalokiteshvara – the Bodhisattva of Compassion. He friend was stunned and reported his view of reality permanently changed.
Russell says, ‘Since the time of the Enlightenment, science has separated itself from the mysticism of the Church, and our psychic nature got swept up in that house cleaning. When the SRI program had millions of dollars over 23 years, there was a great upsurge in US interest in psychic research.’
Over the years he has taught remote viewing worldwide - discovering the students who were the most successful in terms of aptitude and results to be cheerful, outgoing, intelligent and successful in life.
Since the SRI research, and to the best of Russell’s knowledge, there is no remote viewing program in the US government currently being used for the war on terrorism, though he does feel there was a huge missed opportunity not to use remote viewing, especially following 911.
In terms of the published evidence, he says, ‘the physics community is much more interested in the findings than the psychologists, because our data is in agreement with non-local space time, which is a hot topic in modern physics. Even atheists can learn to do remote viewing, but they may be surprised to discover that they are part of a spiritual community that they didn’t know existed.’
